| The University of Houston Band Department is one of the nation's premier band programs. The UH Band offers students a wonderful musical environment in which to learn, grow, and make life-long friends. Opportunities exist for students of all majors to perform in one of our outstanding concert bands, the Spirit of Houston Marching Band, Cougar Brass, or in one of our fine jazz bands. | The Spirit of Houston is the largest spirit organization at the University of Houston, composed of The Cougar Marching Band, UH Twirlers, Colorguard, Cheer team, and the Cougar Dolls dance team, Membership in the Spirit of Houston is an experience that instills quality characteristics in each member.The band is open to all univeristy students and incoming freshman IN ALL MAJORS. The Spirit of Houston is actually composed of an almost equal mix of music majors and non-music majors, and every member in the marching band recieves a band scholarship for involvement with the organization. The marching band does not require an audition for membership, except for the Drumline. The Spirit of Houston comes together for "Spirit Week" one week before school starts to prepare drill and music for the upcoming season. Over 300 members strong, the Spirit of Houston is a icon for the University, the City of Houston, and even the State of Texas. The Cougar Marching Band performs at all Home football games and travels to select away games throughout the football season. The band's pride is based on the tradition and history of the University of Houston and is displayed at UH Football games as well as other events including it's annual feature concert "Spirit on Stage". The band has been featured in other performances and events including numerous Bowl Games, Parades, and the Super Bowl XXXVIII Halftime show produced by MTV. KEY INFORMATION: Who can join? Any student admitted to the University of Houston, regardless of Major. All members of the band recieve a band grant. How do I become a member? First, JOIN the Spirit of Houston for the Upcoming 2010-2011 year through our online form. You will begin to recieve information about membership, early-move in, and more information about SPIRIT WEEK over the summer. Click here to JOIN. You must also register for the official marching band (one hour) course through your MyUH account. The course number for the class is 18058. When does marching band meet? SPIRIT WEEK is the first week that the entire Spirit of Houston comes together, normally the week before school starts. The marching band also rehearses from 6PM to 9PM on Mondays (Brass), Wednesdays (Woodwinds), and Fridays (Full Band). There are also various events that require additional rehearsals and preparation. Most football games will be on Saturdays. Championship Game and Bowl scheduling is posted and announced as it becomes available. What else do I need to know? The UHBANDS website is the #1 source of information for members and new members in the Spirit of Houston. We use the website to post the most updated news, events, schedules, and important information to keep everyone connected. The Spirit of Houston also uses an advanced SpiritTEXT system toimmediatley alert all members of important information via text message. The calendar feature of the website will be updated with the most recent information regarding the upcoming season.
